4.13 Promotion

    1. Promotion Requirements: For requirements that apply to academic rank, see policy 4.10 Academic Rank.

    1. Promotion Timeline and Process :Faculty are notified by their dean of their eligibility for promotion based on an annual timeline for submission and review of promotion portfolios. (If any of these dates fall on a weekend or holiday, then the item is due on the next business day.)

    1. By September 1: Vice President for Academic Affairs notifies each college dean about faculty members’ eligibility for promotion. Deans subsequently notify the eligible faculty members in their colleges.

    2. By November 1: Eligible faculty members respond to their dean with the decision whether to pursue promotion. Faculty who do not respond by this date are presumed to have forgone the promotion review opportunity for that academic year.

    3. By February 1:Faculty promotion portfolios are due to the college dean. The dean then shares the promotion portfolio with the college’s promotion review committee.

    4. By March 1:The college promotion review committee’s recommendation is due to the dean. Following review of the faculty member’s portfolio and promotion review committee’s recommendation, the dean forwards these items with the dean’s own recommendation to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

    5. By March 15:The dean reviews all materials and forwards their recommendation, the college promotion review committee’s recommendation, and the faculty member’s promotion portfolio to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The Vice President for Academic Affairs makes a recommendation to the President prior to the Board of Trustees spring meeting.  The President in turn makes a recommendation regarding promotion to the Board of Trustees.  The President notifies the promotion candidate in writing of the promotion decision.

    1. College Promotion Review Committee: Deans appoint a review committee with a minimum of three faculty members who must be at or above the level of the academic rank for which candidates are applying. The committee reviews applications and makes recommendations based upon the established categories defined in 4.11 Evaluation and Annual Review. As part of this process, the committee interviews the candidate, the department chair, and other individuals as appropriate. The review committee votes by secret ballot and records the total number of ayes and nays. The review committee submits written recommendations to the dean. When the recommendation of the committee is nay, a list of areas in which the candidate must demonstrate more growth/development is included with the recorded votes.
    2. Promotion Salary Increase: All faculty earning a promotion in rank from assistant professor to associate professor and from associate professor to professor shall be awarded an amount designated by the college administration, in addition to any recommended increase in compensation based upon their annual review.
