4.7 Faculty

Policy Statement:

Faculty are expected to exemplify objectives and values consistent with the mission statement of the university.  Faculty are required to attend Faculty Assembly meetings, Convocation, Baccalaureate, and Commencement ceremonies while under contract and are encouraged to participate in other university-sponsored functions and to serve the greater community.  Individual circumstances which might affect one’s ability to attend can be reviewed by Human Resources.  Above all, faculty are expected to have a strong commitment to the success of our students and to proactively assist students in their pursuit of success.

Although faculty members are not assigned the role of faculty advisor to student organizations, their participation is strongly encouraged and may be substituted in lieu of committee responsibility.  Faculty responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Effective classroom and online teaching and interacting with students in a professional manner;
  2. Providing student support through advising and mentoring;
  3. Participating in recruitment and retention efforts, including collaboration with university-wide student support efforts;
  4. Maintaining accurate, timely, and secure records of student grades, attendance, and advisement according to official university procedures;
  5. Maintaining high standards of professionalism in the content, objectives, teaching, and timely grading of all courses in accordance with official university procedures;
  6. Filing accurate course syllabi with the appropriate college each semester and making syllabi available to students in accordance with official university procedures;
  7. Maintaining an understanding of university policies and the curriculum and degree requirements of their respective colleges;
  8. Participating in departmental, school, college, and university faculty meetings and serving on committees as appropriate;
  9. Contributing to the ongoing operation of their respective departments, schools, and colleges;
  10. Assessing their teaching effectiveness via annual portfolios and evaluating courses formally in accordance with official university procedure;
  11. Assuring their availability to students, faculty, staff and administrators by posting and keeping reasonable office hours, as determined by the dean of their respective colleges;
  12. Maintaining a professional level of scholarship by continuous study, research and attendance and participation at professional meetings. These activities are supported by the university through college travel funds and the faculty development program; and
  13. Other duties as assigned.
