CMSD 4050 Piedmont University Foundations of School-Based Speech Therapy

This course provides an in-depth examination of the roles and responsibilities of the Speech-Language Associate (SLA) in school-based settings, with emphasis on ethical practice, supervision, and collaboration under a certified Speech-Language Pathologist. Students develop competencies in evidence-based service delivery, data collection, documentation, and implementation of speech-language interventions within the framework of special education law and policy. The course addresses key processes including MTSS, evaluation and eligibility, IEP development, progress monitoring, and family-centered communication.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Analyze the roles, responsibilities, and ethical standards of the Speech-Language Associate (SLA) within school-based settings, including supervision requirements and scope of practice.
  2. Apply evidence-based practices and data-driven decision-making to support speech-language service delivery, including screening, intervention support, and progress monitoring.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of special education processes and compliance requirements, including MTSS, evaluation and eligibility, IEP development, and documentation procedures. Implement effective collaboration and communication strategies with supervising SLPs, educators, families, and multidisciplinary teams to support student outcomes in education environments.
