CMSD 4040 SLA Practicum Elements I

This 3 hour credit course includes a 50-hour school-based practicum that is designed to help the SLA candidate transition from theoretical knowledge to practical application in a public-school setting. The candidate will gain exposure to diverse student populations, a variety of speech and language disorders, and the functional demands of a school-based Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP). The focus is on observation, clinical planning, material development, and the implementation of established treatment plans under the direct supervision of a certified SLP.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Analyze school-based speech-language service delivery models, disorder characteristics, and student performance across educational contexts through systematic observation and reflection.
  2. Apply evidence-based clinical principles to develop lesson plans, therapy materials, data collection tools, and caregiver resources aligned with student IEP goals.
  3. Implement supervised intervention strategies by facilitating structured therapy activities, delivering appropriate cueing and feedback, and accurately recording client response data within the scope of practice.
  4. Evaluate clinical practices and personal performance through reflective analysis, incorporating supervisory feedback, ethical standards, and professional guidelines to improve future service delivery.
