CMSD 4030 Foundations of School Based Speech Therapy

This 3-credit course provides an integrated overview of the foundational knowledge and clinical competencies required in speech-language pathology. Emphasis is placed on the biological, neurological, linguistic, cultural, and developmental bases of communication and swallowing, as well as the characteristics and etiologies of speech, language, and hearing disorders. Students engage in evidence-based approaches to prevention, assessment, and intervention, with application through guided clinical practicum experiences, structured observations, and case-based learning. Topics include speech sound disorders, language development, cognitive and social communication, hearing, and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Professional standards, ethics, interprofessional collaboration, and data-driven decision-making in educational and clinical settings are also addressed.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Apply foundational knowledge of communication and swallowing process by analyzing the biological, neurological, linguistic, cultural, and developmental bases of typical and disordered communication.
  2. Differentiate and evaluate speech, language, hearing, and cognitive-communication disorders through the application of evidence-based assessment principles and data-informed clinical reasoning.
  3. Develop and implement evidence-based intervention strategies for individuals with communication disorders, incorporating prevention, assessment, and treatment planning across diverse populations and settings.
  4. Demonstrate professional and ethical clinical practice by integrating standards of conduct, interprofessional collaboration, and data-driven decision making in educational and clinical environments.
