7.10 Medical Leave Policy
Definition and Eligibility
Paid medical leave is an authorized paid absence from work, which full-time (40 hours/week), 12-month employees accrue as a result of their employment. All eligible employees accrue and may use medical leave in accordance with the provisions of this policy.
The immediate supervisor must approve medical leave.
Accrual
Full-time (40 hours/week), 12-month employees accrue medical leave during each pay period. Accruals are credited to employees on each pay day. Newly eligible employees will begin accruing leave hours the first day of employment. Accruals will be credited to employees on each successive pay date.

* Overtime is excluded in the calculation of accrual rates for non-exempt, hourly employees.
Eligible employees may carry forward up to the maximum accrual limit from one calendar year to the next each January
Employees eligible for increased accrual rates will be awarded the increase in vacation accrual hours beginning on the first day of the pay period during which the anniversary occurs.
Compensation
Employees may maintain their regular pay and benefits while absent from work on approved medical leave. Employees are not compensated for accrued unused medical leave when employment with the University terminates. Employees who are absent from work due to illness or injury sustained in the course of employment by the University are subject to and paid in accordance with the provisions of the Georgia Workers’ Compensation Law.
