CNSL 6510 Foundations of School Counseling and Ethical Practice

This course is designed to examine the philosophical basis for school counseling including historical and current trends within the field. The course examines program development for P-12 students based on the American School Counselor Association’s national model and standards for school counseling programs. The course will also focus on ethical considerations specific to the practice of school counseling.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon the completion of this course, students will:

  1. Identify the history of and current trends in school counseling
  2. Demonstrate understanding of the roles and responsibilities of school counselors
  3. Understand the legal and ethical considerations specific to school counseling as defined by professional school counseling organizations and credentialing bodies
  4. Recognize and plan for the needs of diverse learners including needs of exceptional children
  5. Explore advocacy strategies and opportunities that address cognitive, racial, ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic, occupation, and physical issues in schools
  6. Integrate school curriculum and skills training to increase students’ personal, academic, and career growth.
  7. Plan and implement developmentally appropriate practices for individual, small-group, and classroom counseling that address issues impacting the development and function of a diverse group of learners.
  8. Demonstrate knowledge of suicide prevention models, crisis intervention, trauma-informed, and 
    community-based strategies
  9. Analyze outcome data, demographics, resources, and supports to make data-driven decisions regarding student success plans
  10. Apply current technologies in education and school counseling to assist students, administrators, teachers, and families to promote informed decision making and growth
