CNSL 6410 Ethical, legal and professional issues in Counseling

This course will provide an opportunity for understanding the complex ethical and legal issues in the counseling profession. Students will be expected to actively participate in online discussions focusing upon complicated and challenging topics.

Upon successful completion of this course students will:

 

  1. Understand the Legal and ethical considerations specific to clinical mental health counseling
  2. Understand technology’s impact on the counseling profession
  3. Apply self-care strategies appropriate to the counselor role
  4. Apply ethical and culturally relevant strategies for establishing and maintaining in-person and technology-assisted relationships
  5. Understand procedures for identifying trauma and abuse and for reporting abuse
  6. Apply ethical and culturally relevant strategies for selecting, administering, and interpreting assessment and test results
  7. Know strategies for interfacing with the legal system regarding court-referred clients
  8. Know ethical standards of professional counseling organizations and credentialing bodies, and applications of ethical and legal considerations in professional counseling
