EDS 8846 Principles of Assessment Design and Application

Data driven instruction is the latest catch phrase in education. Candidates will be able to utilize valid and reliable data to modify instruction on a day-to-day basis. In this course, candidates will learn to design valid and reliable selected response, essay and performance assessments and rubrics for diagnostic, summative, and formative purposes. Data from those types of assessments as well as standardized tests will become the basis for analysis of student learning with the aim of modifying instruction and improving achievement. Candidates will demonstrate the ability to conduct program evaluations to determine the effectiveness of curriculum and instructional practice.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the candidate will be able to:

  1. Appropriately use the language of assessment.

  2. Evaluate the role of assessment in the instructional process.

  3. Investigate the purposes of educational assessment and the types of assessment appropriate for each.

  4. Align assessment strategies with instructional strategies and learning tasks including accommodations and modifications for diverse groups of learners.

  5. Deconstruct Georgia standards in a non-primary discipline to create learning targets, learning outcomes, and evaluation criteria.

  6. Identify vertical alignment within the Georgia standards and alignment of interdisciplinary standards, knowledge & skills.

  7. Describe his/her philosophy regarding assessment and explain the principles guiding his/her future practice.

  8. Evaluate both the potentialities and limitations of the various assessments and procedures used in your school.

  9. Analyze subject team/grade-level assessment data and develop an instructional plan for learner mastery of standards.

  10. Evaluate current trends and issues in assessment, including ethical considerations.
