MCOM 3470 Lighting & Short-Form Video Production

This course focuses on lighting techniques for video production. Students will focus on studio environments as well as location lighting and outdoor settings. Students will build a range of skillsets through shooting short projects aimed at social media distribution.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon the completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the following outcome-based learning skills:

  1. The ability to design and control lighting conditions to elevate storytelling.
  2. Proficiency in the knowledge of fundamental lighting vocabulary such as high key/low key, diffuse, luminance, color temperature, lighting ratios.
  3. Proficiency in different lighting designs such as 3-point, loop, and Rembrandt.
  4. Mastery of the tools that control light such as diffusion, gels, and light meters.
  5. Knowledge of formats used in various social media outlets as well as shooting for them.
  6. Understanding of editing techniques used in various social media outlets to properly light various situations for video and photo shoots.
