EDUC 2010 Civics Education Through a Democratic Capitalism Model

This course is designed to help the student develop a thorough understanding of the nation's civic virtues and of the history of political and economic development (a politico-economic view) in
the United States and apply these virtues in their civic life. The course will establish the link of politics and economics as a unified whole through the lens of democratic capitalism. Education majors will develop lesson plans or curricular units of study to these ends. General Education students will develop a personal plan for civic engagement. All students will develop critical thinking skills in civic debate based upon the nation's founding documents, and the historical and present timeline of democratic and economic development of the nation.

  1. Critically analyze the evolution of American political and economic philosophies
  2. Understand the interrelationship of our nation's model of democratic capitalism
  3. Develop lesson plans appropriate to the education student's certification
  4. Create a plan for civic engagement for non-education majors
