EDSC 6560 Crisis, Trauma & Emergency Intervention

The course is designed to investigate crisis intervention models that promote physical and mental well-being. This course will focus on crisis prevention including de-escalation and behavior management strategies. There will also be a focus on the role of the school counselor during an emergency event and the impact of trauma on individuals, groups, and the counselor. Candidates will also develop skills and knowledge required to assist administrators, teachers, students, and the community during crisis situations.

  • Recognizes the school counselor's role and responsibilities as members of interdisciplinary school, system, and community outreach and emergency management response teams.
  • Understands the effects of crisis, disasters, and trauma on diverse individuals across their lifespan.
  • Differentiates between diagnosis and developmentally appropriate reactions during crises, disasters, and other trauma-causing events.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of crisis intervention including trauma-informed and community-based strategies.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of procedures for assessing risk of self-harm or danger to others.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of suicide prevention models and strategies.
  • Explore de-escalation models and behavior management techniques.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of strategies for assisting students, educators, and community members experiencing personal loss.
  • Recognize different responses to loss in terms of culture and development.
