CMSD 4004 Fluency Disorders

This course is designed to provide a basic understanding of the characteristics of stuttering and people who stutter as well as the theoretical constructs underlying the concepts of fluency and disfluency. This course describes the characteristics, general assessment, and intervention strategies for fluency disorders.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify and discuss the nature, prevention, assessment, and intervention of fluency disorders.
  2. Identify and describe fluency assessments using formal and informal assessment protocols.
  3. Describe the affective, behavioral, and cognitive components of stuttering.
  4. Distinguish between fluency and disfluency and classify disfluent speech.
  5. Develop basic treatment plans for clients who stutter across their lifespan.
  6. Discuss social-cultural aspects of stuttering.
  7. Discuss stuttering in relation to bilingual speakers.
